Aart van den End

Aart van den End vertaler Engels en lexicograaf Gateway vertalingen en woordenboeken

Aart van den End is the founder and sole director of Gateway B.V. He was born in Werkhoven in 1953. After many detours he ended up in Driebergen where he has lived since 2002.

Aart taught English for twelve years, first at vocational school level and then at general secondary education and pre-university education levels. In 1980 he acquired his secondary education teaching qualification and in 1986 he established himself as a freelance translator. He also gave English courses to real estate specialists and in 1990 his teaching experience led him to compile the Property Lexicons Dutch-English, Dutch-German and Dutch-French. This initiative was financially supported by what was then the EEC. In 1993, together with a group of legal translators, he started compiling Juridisch Lexicon / The Legal Lexicon. The first edition was published in 1995. The dictionaries most certainly meet a need, considering their continuing success.

Aart puts a lot of time and effort into updating the dictionaries. He is most enthusiastic about the online lexicons, which allow continual updating. The users of the online versions are also able to ask him translation questions, which provide an extra means of keeping the dictionaries up to date.

As well as translating legal and property texts into English, Aart's hobbies are 'combing' translations made by his colleagues and himself for what he refers to as 'bonuses' for the dictionaries, 'googling' on the Internet to find the right translation, and giving his undivided attention to the news in all its forms, on the lookout for terminology.

In his free time he likes to take long nature walks in the countryside of the Netherlands, Germany and England. Even then he comes across new words every day! He gets a lot of pleasure from the fact that together with his colleagues he can contribute towards the improvement of translation quality.
